Bakithi Kumalo's bass

HI TB'ers

I have been enjoying Link Removed for a while and found some clips with Bakithi Kumalo under clinics. Anyone know which bass he is playing?

I found alot on youtube with Paul Simon with Bakithi on bass and he plays that bass and the sound is great. That band is great man!

I'd like to know too--he has always had a great fretless sound (Graceland). That bass that he's playing in the bptv videos looks like some kind of custom something--definitely different than what he was playing on Graceland. Anyone got a clue what it is?

I think the bass that he played was some sort of Washburn fretless. I don't think there is anything to write home about with the Washburn. I think it was something that he said was the cheapest fretless bass in the store. Great playing on that album, btw.

I asked this in Bassists and didn't get a definitive answer there either.
Regardless, that's a great link. He's my favourite bassist and he's really nice as well, I never get any sense of inflated ego from him.
Clip 6 is really funny for his left-hand technique.

I really want to know who that made that bass! It's not NYWB. He also have fretted 5 string singlecut which could be build from the same builder.

the bass was actually built by arijan from aries basses, but under the SamBella name which is a high end handmade line designed by and offered exclusively by joe from the ny bass loft. it is a pretty amazing bass inspired by carl thompson and ken lawrence's amazing design work while pushing the envelope a bit on electronics by having piezos and magnetics with active electronics from some of europe's most reknown names. a lot of time, thought, and experimentation went into the design of the SamBella basses and they are pretty remarkable (imho). i don't know what they cost or what the build time is on them, but i'd imagine that they aren't cheap. beautiful though.
