Band Fashion

I agree on the "dress better that the audience". For most of the gigs I play, that's not a high bar.
I'm a bald fat older guy. So I can only do so much with what I bring to the table.
But I'm always seeking to dress well, not shabby.
When I'm playing keys, I'm standing behind a 2-tier stand, so largely only the top of me is visible anyways.
I always wear a hat of some type.
When i'm playing a country gig, it's always a nice Western pearl button shirt (Scully, etc) and felt hat.
For my Who and Queen bands, I just seek to wear bright shirt of some kind, black jeans, Doc Marten boots.
For my Zeppelin band, there are a select few wardrobe pieces, but again, JPJ was just hoping to blend in, not stand out. That was everyone else's job in that band.

Because black is a power color, it is imposing with no ambiguity. It means business. It means authority. Certain shades of blue, grey, brown and green can convey that as well, but they will still be darker ones. Black is the ultimate statement in these matters.
i play at church a lot as well. I generally wear jeans, boots, and a polo. Or khakis, dress shoes, and a button up. Outdoor fellowships almost always are dictated by the weather more than style. Church is sort of a different animal for me since it’s typically about worship and less about performance.
You are a snappy dresser, always the best dressed person at your gigs. Looks sharp, I’ll admit it, but I will not emulate.
Clothes that fit properly are a starting point.
I always say, find a look of a celebrity with a similar body type and build and mimic it…within reason.
A combo I like is a garment that one does not find at a mall or Target, with something that is a base that may be more mainstream, and some texture to finish it off, textures could be belts, footwear, button down with tame pattern.
I am in the no shorts camp. But some people can rock it. But I guess I never found legs to be where I feel heat.

I actually think original bands have a whole other set of rules for gig clothes.
Usually original sets are far less time of an audience having to look at you. There is also far less filler at an original gig…hopefully.
Original bands show up to gigs being prepared for people not liking their music anyways, clothes are the last thing to worry about.

So... this is Talkbass, you know that right? This is utterly normal. I will be shocked if this thread doesn’t rack up at least 8 pages.
I mean everyone wears clothes, even if only one big sock.
I try to dress a little nice, but I’m not going to suffer for fashion. If it’s daytime, outdoors, and hot, I am wearing shorts. My concession is to not then also wear a t-shirt and sandals. I’ll wear some stylish slip-on shoes and a colorful collared shirt. Patterned but not flowers.
Or I might wear long linen pants, but with those I might wear leather sandals. Again, no t-shirt.
At night I will not wear shorts. It’s jeans or linen or chinos. If it’s really a funky scene I might wear a t-shirt then. But most of the time I wear a button collared shirt.

Why does that offend you?
I look at this like a conversation at a party. Sure, the group ten feet over might be having the same discussion, but the one you’re having is the one you’re having.
I’m the new guy, so I mean absolutely no disrespect, just trying to learn how the forum works. But I don’t completely understand the frustration. Is this an “unwritten” rule of sorts? I’m just here to have fun and talk with people about my hobby, definitely not trying to stir people up. If I have, I apologize.
I strongly disagree. I think original bands should care more about clothes than cover bands. You're already showing more personality in the music and you should also show more of that with your clothes. Be more you than you would be with a cover band. Have more of a look and take it more seriously. People are there to see you a lot more than they are with a cover band, when you're basically a human jukebox. Sure, they might hate the music, they might hate the clothes, but if you wanted people to like you no matter what, you'd just be playing the hits that everybody liked, aka a cover band.
No need to apologize, you’re new and in time if you check this forum daily you’ll get a wicked case of déjà vu on a regular basis.

Ive seen you play many times and you are always dressed in keeping with the band. I latched onto the poopie because it's fun and it gives me a chance to leave the less than wild day job persona behind
