Sigh. More drama.
Disassembled the head parts so I could do the final polish pass.
Decided (after success fixing a rough bit near the neck join via wet sand to 3000 then repolish) to get rid of the remaing scratches on the back of the headstock the same way.
Neglected to recognize that installing the tuner screws had broken the watersight seal of clear over wood.
So yeah, I got wood-swelling cracks as the water got to the maple around the tuner screw holes.
Good news is all the scratches are 100% gone.
Bad news is...
I let it dry and then wicked some clear in from the ends to try to stabilize, but fixing invisibly over gold is likely not possible. If I scrape almost all the way through and then drop fill (several weeks to fill and cure, then repolish) the new clear is likely to seep into the gold and disrupt the flake pattern, leaving marks anyway.
Best I can probably do (more experienced finishers please chime in!) Would be to brush fresh clear over the top hoping some wicks partway in, let dry, then resand (with mineral spirits!) and repolish.
Will be visible, but hopefully stable.
Tuners will cover some but not all.

NZ band Dragon, film clip in Sydney’s Kings Cross “entertainment district”. Australian residents for many years, they had to change their name overseas and went with Hunter. Brothers Singer Marc Hunter and bass player Todd Hunter being mainstays of the band.
