Band substance abuse

I just want to point out that it's total BS that we have to tell drummers they need to own a kit. I've never seen an ad that said "bassist needed, must own bass", but until I started putting ads out for drummers, I never knew how many people will contact you asking if they need to have a kit.
I suppose if I happened to own a drum kit and a prospective drummer happened not to have one, things could work. But I don't have one at present.

Back to the topic at hand, in the late 60's, I went from a Top 40 band, to a folk-rock band. We were able to recruit the drummer from the first band, because the others started smoking pot, and the drummer couldn't deal with that. So sometimes, someone else's habits may benefit another group!

"Serious" people don't "abuse" in one form or another. "Substance Abuse" means they have to self medicate/release their own contrary beliefs in what they are doing, so it becomes Ok. These types of situations will Never lead to success, because the band members don't believe they deserve it. Move on, and try to find people that are ready to go for the Gold.

I hear excuses, and exceptions. What are you going to do when the BL shafts you over drugs. For those who say it's ok, how many funerals have you avoided? OP, leave now
I've been around functional drunks and heroin addicts most of my life. Trust will always be a big issue. If you stay welcome to the world of walking on eggshells,

We're at page 10 of this thread and I've only just noticed the clever pun in the title. AFAIK, no-one else has mentioned it. My excuse is that I've been down to decaf coffee only in the house for the past week.

Band = banned
I didn't notice that, either.

Seems obvious now, but I didn't catch it either.

I wonder if it was intentional.

Im on the side of play clean, a drink per hour is fine. What you do afterwards is your business but your responsibilty too. There's no way any professional in any field be it golf, accounting, or grass cutting is doing their job best when they are Wrecked. And if thats what you think your job is, a joke, then you no longer deserve to have it. You are there for the crowd and the people who hired you.

The great Louis Armstrong was a tough bandleader. When a very good band member showed up to a gig a little too wasted he told the guy flat out "don't \^*+ up my hustle". That's how a most pro bands work. Weekend warriors are often just looking for a chance to party. Thankfully for many of us there ARE weekend warriors with pro attitudes, and we seek them out.
Louie toked after the gig, never before. He didnt party after the gig, he just went to his room, had chinese food brought in, rolled a fatty and went to bed. He had a special portable hi fi system that he carried with him when he was touring (which was most of the time). He slept with the music going and his assistant kept the turntable full, because he would wake up if the music stopped.
He got busted coming thru customs at least once.
