Bands that sound much better live than on recordings?

One of my favorite bands Twenty One Pilots is much better live in my opinion. they do use some backing tracks b/c it's a duo, but their is so much more energy in their songs when they play them live.

They're actually the only band I've had the chance to see more than once

Super important I don't care if they're not on everyone's lips but people do know a few songs from that Freedom Of Choice album (ahem).

good to know. i agree i love hiphop but not live usually. and almost everyone in hiphop covers the mic w their whole hand & conspire to sound like they're imitating telephone operators. Never understood that phenomenon.

same here. vocal-centered music or solo instrument centric music has to be live. wait is that all music? that's why i mentioned anita baker. earth wind & fire are also super live. maurice white forever!

Contemporary: Arcade Fire. I can't make it through an entire song from their studio efforts. But live, wow, they are incredible. I think this is combined with the visual of so many players and so much activity coming together in such a cogent way on stage.

From days gone by: I was always stunned by how good Journey sounded in their prime. If you think Steve Perry has pipes on vinyl, he was mind-bogglingly good and went beyond just "nailing it" live. And of course, the band spanked it on stage as well.

I love Devo live!!

Their new album is well produced and has good songs, but as stated, most of their best songs suffer from lousy production.

Plus, how many times do you get to see a bunch of guys that look like your old junior high school chemistry teacher rock out on stage?

Definitely agree. Caught them live before listening to their studio work, and I prefer their live stuff.

I am adding two names:

Cake - John McCrae moved too far into synth bass and drum machines by their prime and live they rock harder thanks to having live musicians throwing down.

Muse - I never got into their studio work. Production on it wasn't my style. Live, they have such better energy. Everyone kept telling me to see them live and I am glad I did.:)

Definitely agree. Caught them live before listening to their studio work, and I prefer their live stuff.

I am adding two names:
