Bands using "Backing Tracks"

Well, that sux!!! Who wants to hear a live show that sounds just like the cd? I can stay home and listen to the cd, in that case. I pay money to hear a *live* show...passion, sweat, warts, and beauty...*all* of it.

That tears it. "Big" shows are no longer worth the exhorbitant sums they command. If its not live...if the artists are playing and singing along with a pre-recorded track...then it is worth nothing to me, and I won't pay for it. Nor will I give my kids money so they can go, either.

I totally agree, I've seen a lot of big name bands I really like in huge venues, and I've seen a lot of shows in smaller venues (First Ave in Minneapolis, Sokol in Omaha) and looking back, even though seeing U2, Pink Floyd, the Stones, GNR, Van Halen etc. was cool, the value for a ticket to a stadium show just isn't there for me. I've walked out of way more venues that held 500-1000 people going holy crap, that was a great show than I ever did walk out of a stadium.

I don't understand the feeling that a lot of casual listeners have that a live show needs to sound just like the CD, first of all, why even bother going then, just watch it on MTV, or I guess these days Youtube. It would be like if your sports team came up with some super-playbook that couldn't be defended against, and they just won every game by playing the same plays over and over again, after you've seen it a couple of times, why bother going anymore.

Entertainment Executives must all be lobotomized as part of the hiring process.

when i come back from hunting woolly mammoth with a spear, i like to put on my good bearskin, hit the campfire and relax by listening to 'rock' music.

there's this guy from the next door cave who used to bang two rocks together, and man could he make those things sing. I mean he was great. the chicks went wild. I mean, more wild.

but then this new guy came to the village and started making music using two rocks and a log. that was some crazy music. let me tell you, everyone loved it. they didn't know what was making this new sound but you sure could dance to it.

and now Jimmy Two Rocks can't get a gig anymore. but if you listen really carefully, some nights you can hear him out on the plains, still banging away.

I think backing tracks, harmonizers and other such tricks are blurring what is live music and what is essentially a karaoke act. I have no respect for bands that use either.

Then you don't like the Eagles. Timmy Schmidt let it slip a few years ago that even they will use them. To paraphrase him, who would want to see the Eagles and hear them go out of key. I'm not a fan of backtracking, but he has a point. I saw CS & N about fourteen years ago. They didn't have backtracking and the vocals were often not quite on. Even though I sing and play and know how difficult it is to be "perfect" every time (hell, perfect ANYTIME) I couldn't help but be disappointed.

Major labels suck. They are ruining music. "Make it sound the same"...BLAH!!! BORING!!! PLASTIC!!!

I'll never go to a show that isn't in a bar again. Not one I have to pay for. Its not live, so I ain't payin'.
