Barflies - What is the deal?

As a paramedic/firefighter, I say,"the reason why I have a job are 3 things. Alcohol, tobacco, and stupidity. If you have any of the 3, I WILL see you some day. Now, can I get you a cigarette and shot of whiskey so you can go play in traffic? My students need the business!"

With that said, after a 24 hour or 48 hour shift of not sleeping at the station, having a beer at 8am at the bar is perfectly acceptable in my culture. Growing up as a first responder, I remember kegs of beer and full bars in fire stations and it was common to drink after a call. Now as a professor of Allied Health, it's something I teach against everyday. I still use alcohol as a crutch and drink when stressed. For me, I don't have any alcohol at home and will only drink at a bar because if I have a 6 pack of beer at the house, I don't stop until all 6 beers are gone. Pretty f@*$ing scary to admit!!!!

I like to go to the bar, have 2 beers, watch 14 TVs of BS and go home. Yes, I can get a 6 pack of beer for home for the cost of 2 bar beers. Yes, I can watch TV on my own TV. Yes, I go the bar during daylight hours. It's safer for my mind, body and soul to have beer at the bar verses my house. Plus with football season coming up, having 10 games on at the same time gives me a woody!

This is an interesting thread and look forward to reading more posts....... at the bar.... on my phone..... ignoring killed by death as he needs some social interaction!!!!! :roflmao:

Very wise, sir or mam.
I tend to follow the croatian drinking style of opening the bottle and throwing away the cap. You ain't done drinking till you're out of booze or beers.
So, better for me to keep no booze around the house either and I'm too cheap for bars.
The longer I don't drink the better I feel but sometimes the booze calls me and I answer.

Barflies? By all means every bar should have a few. They're dependable, they show-up and drink (good for the bar), they usually appreciate any form of live music and you don't need to be a star (good for the band) and now that I think about it not too many people I know enjoy drinking alone but you gotta admit that they do serve somebody's purpose and if you got a good filtering process you may find some good 'regulars' hanging about...you never know.
