I've had more than one friend drink themselves literally to death...

I may have misunderstood your original post, but it seemed, to me, that you were placing a stigma on people who drink during the day. Sometimes, morning or afternoon may be a shift worker's "late afternoon or early evening" where they do things "normal" people do after work, drinking being one of them.
An odd thread, with at least one predictable responder!
The only way you can know that people hang out in bars during the day, is to be in a bar during the day. And then you are one of those people who hangs out in bars during the day.
In some English towns the pub has a kind of "living room of the village" feel to it. So people just read the paper, watch TV, or chat with whoever's around.
