Bartolini 94J set - 4 String

I came across a Bartolini box with a set of 94J pickups in it - bridge and neck. At least, it had 94J hand-written on the inside label that also reads "quadraphonic bass". They appear to be the versions with 4 coils that are accessible externally, via 8 solder points. Neck pickup measures approximately 3 1/2", bridge approximately 3 5/8".

The neck coils are unsoldered; each coil reads approximately 1.34k. The bridge coils are soldered together in series and read approximately 5.41k.

They will probably end up going in a parts J-bass with a maple/maple neck, Hipshot Ultralite tuners and a (real?) Fender Jazz Body. I have several questions:

Are these active or passive?
Would any particular preamp sound good or bad, Bart or otherwise?
Is it possible to get that old, warm P-bass tone from this set - think Motown...
I'd prefer to keep the stock jazz control plate...
