Good news is that used Bart preamps aren't super expensive. Compared to something like an East preamp, which is very pricey... although shockingly amazing, I must say.
Another option that I've found in a rather exciting discovery is that the Seymour Duncan preamp that is designed to go with their Stingray style humbucking bass pickup happens to sound a hell of a lot like a stingray preamp in it's general tone... far more so than most more neutral preamps (such as bartolini).
John East also has preamps that sound very much like stingray preamps (I'm not sure if all the East ones sound like Rays... I've only been interested in the East preamps that sound like stingray preamps), for what it's worth... just throwing other ideas out there from my personal experiences if you do end up having to replace your preamp and want to alter the fundamental tone a bit while you're at it.
Cheers

So once I find a friend who has one I can borrow I'll dive in.
