It's not so much about power as the speaker displacement for a certain amount of power. A 50 watt amp through an efficient 2x15 would do what you want, but that takes up way more space and costs more than more power through a single smaller speaker.

Bass amp question

A bass amp that could keep up with a 30w tube guitar head into an efficient 212 would likely be 200-350w or more into an efficient 410 or 212. The details depend on the musical genre, venue space, etc. I understand that you do not need to do this, but it puts bass vs guitar required power into perspective. Basically a 40w bass rig is not in the same performance class as a 30w tube guitar rig. However, several combos in that general price range offer more than sufficient volume for home practice, and also allow a line out to a recording console. Combos from Ampeg, Eden, Fender, Gk and others would meet your needs. It's a pretty competitive market. Most of them have a somewhat peaked bass (from the built-in speaker) that provides a sense of bass richness, but suffers a little with respect to note definition. There are descriptions here on how to modify some of them for a more refined sound. OTOH, many find the stock tone to be quite good, or at least usable.
