Bass back from the shop - fretless epoxy content

Had my bass in the shop to get an eoxy coating on the fretless board. The bass was already a monster, this just made it even more incredible.

HG Thor does boards like that too, though I think they use some kind of Polyester. I love that finish, you get a lot of high end sizzle with rounds, but they do wear on the shiny board a little. Pressure wound or nickel rounds are a decent compromise.

They did great work. Super meticulous. I am very happy, feels and sounds awesome. I've had a few coated fretless boards in my time, this one is really nice.

Life is too short to cower in a corner, worrying about fingerboard wear. You have a hard coated board - play rounds. The mwah is worth it.

But doesn’t this guy have an 8 year waiting list? There’s a thread around here from a few years ago where a guy said he contacted him and H.G. Thor said the waiting list was the better part of a decade or something and he wasn’t even sure he’d finish them all before he retired
Edit: it’s a 4 year wait, but you can get in a faster expedited line for an extra $250

Yeah, it is a crazy long wait list but I don't know why. I had a bass done by him and, while the job was decently done, I had a neck done locally that was a much closer profile to the neck. The H.G. Thor job really seemed like he just poured a thin layer and left it without any finishing, aside from the sparkles. Mind you, the job I had done locally was also poured super thick (which H.G. Thor does as "the Jaco treatment").

Your job looks great OP. I like to buff back the gloss on the epoxy. I find it looks much more natural that way.

I've been wanting to do this to my fretless jazz years but unfortunately I have yet to find someone in my area that does this specific work. Would you say it was expensive or... ?

It was $600, and I am pretty sure they will do it if you ship them the bass if you are outside of Nola. They did an absolutely outstanding job. Very meticulous, thin coating, And I asked for the glossy finish - it's like glass, seriously. I am very pleased.

Just put La Bella tapewounds on my fretless and they do bigtime Mmwwaahhh, too. Might be a little less abrasive than rounds and the tapes still sound like "played in" rounds. Just FYI.

I've been using La Bella tapewounds on my fretless for quite a while. I just put on a Gold White Nylon set, and they have really nice mwah. But I have a bare rosewood fingerboard, if I had a hard coated fingerboard I'd be trying some rounds for sure.

I use pure nickel rounds on this bass. Sounds absolutely killer.

Great idea, and gorgeous. Epoxy should be quite hard and last.
