Bass Built from Scraps & Recycled Parts

Build spec: to build a bass out of scraps as cheaply as possible by someone who doesn't really have much idea of what he is doing.
No one is more surprised that it worked than me.
It is a bass banjo primarily constructed from what was probably a verandah post and a castrol oil can. 5 strings (EAGDC). Its was meant to look "hand made" and rough as.

I think it probably cost me about $50 all up in bits and pieces and the only musical instrument bits are the 5 strings, 2 peizo elements and the output jack. And sounds much better than it looks. The bulk of the $50 is in the peice of recycled wood and the strings most stuff was just laying around in my or my dad's garage.

Very creative. It is so cool to see someone doing this kind of build.

Occasionally, I run across instruments built like this from the (19)30's & 40's; back then, there was no aftermarket & rarely instruments for that matter (in certain areas)... If you wanted to play music, you just made one from whatever you had. Good to see someone still taking this approach.

A discussion about handbuilt instruments in the states from the late 1800's to the early 1900's was part of the original discussion with my uncle who I built this thing so I could do some bluegrass jamming with. So I'm glad it reminds you of it. Nice bass too.

I added some quick footage of someone playing it so you can hear it in theoriginal post. He's not a fretless player, not a 5 string player and you have to work hard to get it to work but its really works.
