Bass Choice...effects the great neutralizer/saviour?

Hello,
I have been out of bass playing for decades but want to get back in. Recently I have tried out two basses which I like. A Fender (Squire) (Jazz or Precision) Vibe 70 and a Sire M5 (Jazz or Precision).

I notice minimal sound differences. In other words there are sounds where each outshine each other. Having been out of the bass world for decades effects such as preamps, EQ's and such have come a long way. I am wondering if I should just buy the best playing bass and if I need more low end, punch or whatever just use effects to fix it. Is my thinking sound?

Any advice/opinions are welcome.

Yeah. You should always buy the bass that fits/feels best in my opinion. After 4 decades playing I know for certain I can’t tell a P from a J on a mixed recording. And I don’t personally know another bassist who can. They are not exactly the same but you can certainly use either for any style.
Since the differences are neck shape and pickup position I’d decide which neck shape fits my mitts first. Then get it in Daphne blue because it’s cool.
Then buy a bunch of pedals because…

Buy the bass you like the feel and ergonomics of, and worry about the tone later. MultiFX are really cheap these and can do an extraordinary amount. That said, I played in cover / wedding / originals band for many years using the one bass, adjusting playing position and style as well as a couple of quick and easy EQ changes and did fine - no pedals, just straight into amp or later the desk.
