BASS CRISIS!!!

Yeah, he was using a Stealth Black Bongo, but he only used those for that tour. Most of my favorite tracks of his were done with the Wal or the Spector.

I like the Laklands, but worry that they might be too "kind" for this type of music. To be fair, I haven't heard the new Laklands that are in the 55-02s.

I'd check into them, in my opinion, the bartolini pickups that used to be in Laklands were too "kind" just as you put it, but I own a 55-02 with the Lakland pickups and they are great, they can do pretty much any sound I could want them to put out. You can make it sound like a Stingray, a Jazz, both, and stuff neither can do. It's really cool. Plus there is a mid frequency selector that can give the bass more tonal variety. They are factory set at 600, you can go down to 250 or anywhere between for more low mids.

And I second the idea of buying used, if you're careful to try before you buy/do your research, buying used can be a great thing to do to save some money. And most of the time the used instrument will be just as good as a new one.

Thanks mang.

if you're lookin' for amazing versatility at a really good price

start with a basic Tribute G&L L-2500...excellent bass for the money...

then replace the preamp with an ACG preamp...this preamp is a filter preamp and is wayyy more versatile than the stock preamp on the G&L...nothing against the G&L pre, it's just not built for the gymnastics of Alan's preamp design...

I got a G&L Tribute L2500, and for the money it sure is a nice bass. I get no noise from the electronics, and I think the latest models are fully shielded (at least mine was). Only problem is that the pickups need dampening, some foam or rubber down the springs and you're good to go. The preamp's alright, but I have to admit, from all the available tonal options, the tribute disappointed me, I just can't get the tone I want (I play something similar to what you said with one of my bands, and techno-death gymnastics with another one). It just doesn't cover it, I don't know. Still, I do fully recommend it to anyone, its build quality, electronics, everything is as it should, the bass is worth way more than the what the tag says. Only real objective downside on the bass is the tuners, they constantly crap out on me, even after a good setup. But I don't exactly play "calm" stuff, so I had that from most basses (surprising, not from a squier or a cort I previously had!).

Hope that helped man. Good luck! :)
