If i were to add a member to that group, it would likely be guitar or piano. With that said, the core trio can work too as long as you, the bass player, are outlining the harmony well.

You need an instrument that plays chords. Guitar, keys, vibes, whatever. Never heard a jazz/blues band that didn't have a chordal instrument.

Saw that you figured out the problem, but just wanted to chime in that the vibes player would be a cool sound that is not done too much anymore. you wouldn't have to worry about them getting in your range. You would have to worry about getting the vibes and traveling with them...

Glad you found some keys; I agree with 40hz that your saxplayer be darn good or close to pro level imo for a trio. Still everybody gotta be "tight".
