P Bass with flats - because it gives you some sort of 'cred'

Micro amps - have come and gone, but they're back and I own one :D

Torzal Twist - didn't quite take off, interesting concept though

SX - buy cheap and upgrade parts, then create recordings daring others to guess which is the SX bass, lol

Emo - I have no idea what to call it - perhaps a bastardization of the Cure and post punk, eventually merging into a heavily marketed genre/fashion a la Hot Topic

Down-tuning to be 'metal'

Road Worn series - for reasons other than playability

Straplocks are here to stay

Fretless is not a fad
P bass is not a fad

stupid SMS abbreviated speak on TB ... I keep on having to look up stuff like "GAS" just to keep up with conversations ,and I'm only 36 I'm to young to be saying I'm too old to understand.

I have urban dictionary bookmarked for god sake

It's killing me. What is Emo? How is it a bass fad? I also have trouble with abbreviations. OMG! IMO IMHO

(OK...Googled Emo. Got it! Didn't know what it is 'cause I don't listen to it..........YUCK!)

Another bass fad not mentioned. Double string basses like the 8 string made by Hagstrom, Hammer and others. Taking it farther.........Hammer's triple string, 12 string bass used by Cheap Trick's bassist, Tom Petersson.

As one TBer mentioned, maybe us bassist are more prone to fads toward our instrument. Ya think?

Oh man...........sorry, another bass fad popped into my head. How about the Disco bass thing of plucking the root and snapping the octave while accending and decending to the next chord change.............ha ha ha. Perhaps a "guilty pleasure" for me! ha ha ha

Has anybody mentioned brass nuts? My '64 Jazz was fitted with one when I bought it, and I almost never see them now. That bass had great sustain, but I can't say that the brass nut had anything to do with it.

P.S. While the P-Bass w/ flats probably *is* a fad, I still think it's a pretty cool way to study R&B bass. I had one set up like that years ago, and I only used it on one or two songs live. I did use it to work through Alan Slutsky's books back in the day, and that was great. It didn't give me any kind of cred; the only way to get that is to sound like YOU.

playing with your thumb on the top of the body (a la Sven Pipien) as opposed to on the pickup? Seems lots of wanna-be's in the mid 90's were doing that because they never had anyone show them the correct way to play.

I guess it works for some, but it drives me crazy...

also, wearing fingerless gloves while playing...
