It's got nothing to do with being a douche, and has everything to do with entertainment.

When you are performing on stage you are there to entertain people, and people expect to not only be entertained by your music but by the performance of that music. That's the whole point of live music; it's a way for the audience to experience the music on a level that can only be achieved by face to face interaction. No one want's to see a band live who just stands there motionless showing no enthusiasm.

Now I'll give you that stunts like guitar spins are not for everyone or for every band. I'm sure that if you played in a smooth jazz group that sort of thing would look silly, but in other genres that sort of thing is a huge crowd pleaser. So let's not be so quick to call some one a douche because they want to be a better entertainer.

I have a cheap-o squier i do that with at shows. its got strap locks AND duct tape. I did have the bass fly away on me the first time i tried it at a show though. picked it up and kept on playing.
