Bass Gear Demos by Dawghouse

Some new arrivals for this week. They‘ll be added to the queue for videos.

Waiting for the Ampeg SGT-DI & NightOwl Edison reviews. I use & enjoy both and interested in your thoughts.
The Ampeg SGT-DI video is scheduled for early July. I enjoyed playing with it, though I’ve never been a huge fan of Ampeg amplifiers. I thought the preloaded cab models were perhaps not the best - I would be interested to try some different cab models, though this wouldn’t really fit with my video format. In any case, it’s a great sounding unit with a great range of tones available. As for the Edison, mine just arrived this week. I’ve had a bit of a play with it, but haven’t gone in depth. Would I be correct in thinking it would really shine in front of another preamp with EQ etc?

I haven't found any use for the cab sims either. Too dark for me. But I love the clean tones and while most like the B15, I prefer the SVT, which adds some higher frequency presence. I set the gain about 2 and slightly boost volume over unity gain.

Sometimes I run the SGT-DI clean and add some OD from the TC Spark, depending on the room/ stage. Sometimes I use the SGT circuit and no TC Spark. Or, SGT-DI clean & the "clean" mode on the TC Spark for certain songs, when I want a pillowy low end.

I own both 1st & 2nd [w/ boost switch] versions of the Edison. I run the 2nd version sporting an NOS Tesla tube w/out the boost. Haven't heard of any bass players using the boost switch. However, adding the boost switch makes my somewhat anemic Gretsch hollow body come alive, so it's nice to have it available for that.

My rig consists of bass, to TC Spark, to tuner, to Edison, to HPF/LPF, to SGT-DI. I use this for both live & studio.

Cool, that’s all good info, thanks. Truth be told, I’m not quite sure how best to demo the Edison - I tested it briefly by itself and didn’t find it to be particularly exciting. Not bad by any means, just not a wide range of tones that would work well in a video. Maybe I’ll try pairing it up with the Sushi Box Mayday, I reckon that could be a good fit.

Like any single tube pedal the effect is subtle but I find it adds a tubey roundness to the tone. I use it as a slight boost, setting the volume a little over unity gain.

Btw, just subscribed you your YT channel.

I’ve decided to switch from two videos per week to three - I’ve got a bit of a backlog of videos ready to be released and just want to get them out there. It’ll be Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 9am AWST. Speaking of videos, here is today’s release:

Sick of you??? Hell, you're putting his kids thru college!!
I'm not sure if it's the post man, but I'm definitely putting someone's kids through college. Every time I say to myself that I'm going to slow down, a nice piece that I haven't had the chance to test yet pops up. Most recently it was a Sushi Box Neptunium that just so happened to be here, in Australia.
