I received the book when I was out of high school when my buddy showed me the guitar grimoire. I had intent to attend music school and had a difficult time connecting the fingerboard when improvising. I also had a bad habit of playing in specific keys and certain areas of the fingerboard but the bass grimoire allowed me to venture out and look beyond the horizon when it came to positions and the fingerboard. After years of studying this, I can confidently improvise comfortably in any key anywhere on the bass but what made things difficult was the lack of application of the scale for the chord. There is a section that does show what chords are normally used but it does take time. This is one of the very few books that I truly enjoy and will recommend to anyone trying to understand scales and modes.
I think it may depend on the person as I have read through the comments, people swear by it and others regard it as not useful. I also did notice that there was no need for such a massive book when you could just put in one scale/mode of each type and then change keys. It's all the same except you just shift your hand.
