Bass-Heavy Canned Tracks for EQing Subs?


IME , using a CD that you know very very well is a good thing in the end of your process. If you know very well your reference CD , It should be OK.
I mainly use SpectraFooX and pink noise but I always finish with a very well known recording and always put little finishing correction with the tracks.
In some circumstances , going by ears is enough too. (small kits, little gigs)

That is IMHO mostly IME.
Exactly, any EQing w/ RTA should be followed up with a listening evaluation.

What exactly is real-time analysis?
Typically it involves playing something like a pink noise signal through the speakers. The signal is picked up by a calibrated mic that’s fed to a computer with an appropriate software program. The program generates a graph that shows the frequency response that the speakers are generating. It will show, for instance, how low the subwoofers can play, as well as how high the high-frequency horn reaches before it rolls out.

In a perfect world you’d see perfectly flat response on the graph from the low bass to the high frequencies, but of course that’s impossible. So what the graph will show is where the deviations from flat are, which is where you’d want to consider using an equalizer to compensate. If you’re using the equalizer during this, the display will show the changes in response that the equalizer causes, as you make the adjustments, in “real time.” Hence the moniker “real time analysis” or "real time analyzer."

Okay, that's pretty much is happening with the DriveRack. I use the "flat" default and let her rip. Its pretty interesting to listen to changes in the pink noise whilst watching the corresponding changes on the graphic EQ.

On those yorkville subs-are they the ones with three knobs on the back? Mine are currently set (left to right) 12 o'clock, 5 oclock (far right as it'll go, to the 150 rolloff) and 7 oclock (far left as it'll go). Those settings will make a big difference. Those settings were used when the subs were being paired with the matching tops.

Every plugged your bass into the sub? wheeeeeeeeee forget anything other than the bottom two strings, but man does it make everything vibrate! (I didn't do it for long...was just testing that they were still alive without setting up a mixer).

No such luck. These are the el-cheapo Performance series with single 18"s. Attentuators.....who needs knobs? They're pretty straight forward; plug 'n play.

If it were me I would pick 80hz or 60hz boost one and cut the crap out of the other if you want a nice low punch use the 60 which is what I do and normally just cut the 80 but you could use the 80 although I find 80 pulls more power from most subs and booms in most rooms. As for the 100hz I normally do a low sweep on both sides of my 60 or 80. Hope that helps
 
If you are using the DriveRack, eq'ing the whole system, you don't need the extra para eq's. Just reajust the eq on the DriveRack. It sounds like you are not satisfied with the sound still. You mentioned the dynamic aspects of the sound. Perhaps there is too much reverberation in the room so you need to fine tune the room, not the eq.
