In the video linked below. At first I was thinking Gretsch Electromatic, but I've never seen one with a black neck and the headstock looks different. Anyone know?

Hi, this comment is from Bill Laswell. "The bass you are talking about, bought it at the guitar center on 14th street for some rock band, do not remember the name of the band. but later, i used this bass for PRAXIS, with Buckethead and Brain. thanks. by the way, it wasn't expensive..."

side note: praxis' transmutation is a mind blowing album...nice to see laswell getting some talkbass action
I had forgotten about Zorn and dug out some old discs.....thanks. I love everything Laswell does...he has a direct line to my brain!

Seen/heard Laswell a number of times, with Painkiller (Brain on drums, Buckethead on guitar & Zorn), with Fred Frith, and have followed him since the late 80's w/Material, Massacre, Golden Palomino's, Praxis and the Miles Davis redux. He doesn't seem to sleep.

That first Material album and (especially) Bill's first solo album were incredibly...well, I don't want to say "influential" because I'd already started to form my own musical voice and concept by the time I heard them...but they were very validating for me: They demonstrated that the aesthetic I was embracing was viable, and that one could make seriously badass music pursuing that muse. I never get tired of hearing those records.
My introduction to Bill was an interview in Bass Player magazine where the intro tag line was "Bass is some serious sh*t". I knew right away that i was gonna like this guy.

hi, we talked to James (Bill's engineer/tech) to make sure which bass Bill is using. here is the answer.

I believe this is it. Or at least an earlier model of this bass.
It was slightly modified in that the volume knob was unwired from the signal path.
The pickup goes direct to the output. And the Pick guard was removed.
I Believe that Bill first got this bass around the making of Praxis-Profanation.
