Drastic increase? That may or may not be relative. The Seinfeld theme, though done on a synthesizer, came out in what 92/93?
Oddly enough, though, I was watching some TV with some friends yesterday and one of them did actually mention this cool bass pattern that was the background music for either Nurse Jackie or The Big C, I forget which.

i don't know about now, but in some of those ads to get a free credit score, they had a guy playing a gold Jack Casady bass. i thought that was pretty cool.

That BT advertising campaign shows a teenager playing bass, which results in the other one getting a headache and leaving. Some truth in there?

He's a TB'er. A lot of us voted for his band when they were in a contest for that gig.
I thought that I had been noticing all the bass because I got a subwoofer. There are quite a few commercials with good riffs. Cadilac commercials, for example. It also seems that the transitions between scenes on the reality type TV shows have bass lines.
