Bass Integrity in Question.... HELP PLEASE!!!

I bought an L-2500 from GC last year. Same problem. Truss rod bullet adjuster was stripped. I got it out myself. Took the bass and a new bullet adjuster to my tech to do a setup and when he tightened it up, the truss rod broke.

Getting a new neck was cheaper than replacing the broken truss rod.

A new neck was $450 from G&L, plus $150, I think it was, for a color-matched headstock. And I had to send the bass to them to do it and they kept the old neck. They turned it around in just under a month.

Bottom line: just based on what I've read here, I would be inclined to assume that, if the bullet adjuster is damaged, then it was probably over-tightened to the point where the truss rod is now damaged and likely to break at any time. So, the only way the bass is worth buying is if you can get it for some price where that plus around $550 (by the time you ship it both ways) is still a number you would feel good about.

Oh, and, if you have to deal with G&L, be prepared to spend days at it. I think pretty much EVERY time I called them I had to leave a voice mail and then somebody called me back 2 or 3 DAYS later. And if I couldn't answer the phone right then, and they went to my voice mail.... well, anyway, it was just a huge PITA. They were great to deal with, when I could actually get on the phone with them. They just don't have remotely enough manpower handling customer service, as far as I could tell.

Ditto for email. Responses always took 2 or 3 days.

So I passed on the bass.

I went in today, and honestly, I'm not sure how I missed it (must have been blinded by the price tag :rollno:), but the neck is a goner.

Larry Hartke put a LTD B405 in my hands, and I changed my deposit over for one of those... talk about bang for buck! Honestly, I never ever thought I would even consider buying an LTD, but playing one changed my mind. A little heavy... bit of neck dive... but nothing a good strap wont fix.

So anyone interested in a fixer-upper, there's a cool G&L L-2500 at Sam Ash, NYC that needs a new neck... should make for an awesome bass one day.

That bass might be a great candidate for a Moses replacement neck, *if* you could get the bass cheap enough. You offered $400? If one could get them down to $350 and then get the Moses neck for $500, that would be in the ball-park of L2500s.

I've thought about doing that with one of my L2500s, but they are 100% functional as it is.

We didn't say to walk away. We said to RUN away. Do it as hard & fast as your legs can carry you.

We may have even alluded to that bass' value compared to a psycho girlfriend.

Now...

18 months is 18 months and things change. G&L can probably provide a new neck. It'll still be way expensive, but it can be done. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for pricing.

By the time you're done buying the thing and having it repaired, you will have probably spent enough money to buy a USA G&L in good condition. But if this is THE BASS, then let 'er rip!

You guys apparently missed my last post... so I'll repeat... I walked (or ran) away from the bass and put the deposit instead on an "LTD B-205 SM".

Yeah, you don't want to be dealing with that. I played a used Lado at a local store and the action was quite high, yet the bridge saddles were low. It had these black, low tension tapewound strings on it. With steel or nickel strings it would have been unplayable. I figured there must be something up with the neck. To make matters worse, it was a neck through! They wanted $2400 for it. :eek:

All this to say, when there's neck trouble BEWARE!

For the most part... considering it was a used bass, yes.
