Is this being done now days? Does it work well? Anyone here give lessons (metal) I'd like to try it if this is done?

Bass lessons by Cam conferencing?

Yes, there are several bass players who give lessons (mostly) via Skype, including me.
The big advantage is that you can get bass lessons from professional players even if there isn't one living in your area.
There are some disadvantages as well though. For example, jamming together is out of the question (time lag) or sometimes there's a bad connection.
Also, for example, if I give my students a backing track and they play it on their PC to play a long with, the sound of the backing track arrives sooner to my speakers than the sound of your bass that goes through your microphone.
There are ways around this though, but that means some investments.
I connect a microphone and laptop to a mixing table and then connect the line out from the mixing table to the soundcard of my Desktop PC. Then I select that channel of my soundcard as the input source for Skype. This works very well, but I don't expect my students to have such a set-up. A webcam with mic is often enough.
All in all, it's a good solution for people who can't find a teacher in their area.

About 6 months of the year I connect via Skype with my instructor. I travel south and want to keep knowledge growth going. There are very few short comings but the benefits far out weigh these. Starting next week I will be back on Skype foe the next 6weeks. Try it, I think you will like the outcome.
