Well ... for the muting thing, I never saw the muting on a DB classical piece but yeah I saw it on a piano piece.
I think a part of learning slap is to learn by yourself muting to get a clean slap line.
Most of the time I use my plucking hand palm to mute, never the freting hand thumb, I always though it is a very bad way of playing any stringed instrument.
