Bass lines that almost everybody plays wrong...

It always seems like the cocky guys that think the songs mentioned in this thread are somehow "beneath them" to listen to and play correctly...are the same ones that totally screw them up on-stage.
This thread has me thinking I should go listen to some songs I knew by heart, ya know. Just to check. Frankly I imagine some other people are thinking the same thing.
Most bass players I've heard just follow the organ chords during the verse. The bass line Berry Oakley played was altogether different.
Higher Ground - RHCP version. A lot of people don't seem to get the main rhthym right.
Superstition is another, as is Play that Funky Music. Although I will admit I play PTFM wrong. The right way seems to lack energy in a live setting without you playing all the notes.

This is a fun thread. I try incredibly hard on cover gigs to get the parts right and the constant butchery out there pisses me off.
see, reading this i guess i found the concept of people playing things wrong annoying..
but then i think about how when i play a song i usually write my own version sort of that is based around the origenal part.
i mean, sure, if the person covering it plays incorrect notes all the time then thats one thing, but i kinda like to add the odd tasty fill or mess with the groove a little.
playing everything note for note gets boring and kinda detracts from one developing thier own style i think.

No, JA is correct, at least I have heard it before. The bass lines differ by one note, which Vanilla ICe himself noted on his behind the music, in response to claims of stealing the lick.
I don't think I can improve on James Jamerson's bass lines by altering them. Didn't stop me from developing my own style.
It's one thing to improvise on a bass part that you have learned and have nailed down, but the thing is that too many "bass players" just stop learning a song at a certain point and say "good enough" or "close enough for rock and roll." FAIL! That is when you suck.
Why can't people go the extra mile (or sometimes only a couple feet to play something correctly) to learn things the way they are supposed to be played.
There's too much of a "who cares" attitude and it is always the ones that suck that say who cares if every note isn't just right. I hear it in cover bands every time I see them.

funny thing is, if you do actually play the correct bass parts to the songs then you become known as arrogant, stuck up and have no imagination...
I still show my students the correct ways to play the bass "standards".

If I sat down and started figuring out Primus bass parts, I'd be dust before I figured out half of them, if that.
