Bass Neck - 6 to 5

I am planning on converting this Ibanez SR 6 string neck to a 5 string neck for my modded ANB205 (Refinishing a body) I want to end up with a nut width of 1-13/16", will have a new headstock shape (5 holes of course) and I will reshape the neck to fit the existing pocket

Any suggestions and tips on the best way to do it? I have plenty of tools, I would like to stay away from having to remove and refret

That's basically it. If I had a stock short-scale with a Fender-type neck, but I wanted it to be a bit narrower (width, not depth) to somewhere in between the stock width and a Hofner Beatle Bass, could I plane it down, or would it compromise the strength of the neck?

Follow-up question: Would it be worthwhile, or even possible, to build a custom neck that fits a Warmoth SSB neck pocket, but has a narrower fingerboard and neck once you get out of the pocket area? (i.e. like the fingerboard is "stepped back" around the heel area)

Has anyone here ever done this? The idea is to have my neck, which is 1-11/16" at the nut, narrowed down to 1.5" at the nut. Think of it as converting a P-bass neck to a J-bass neck.... except this is a Musicman.

Obviously, this would require sanding/shaving down both sides of the neck to adjust the angles down to the neck pocket. Are there concerns about blending with the headstock?

Also, since this is a Musicman, it has one of those "compensated nuts" which I believe EBMM will NOT sell you a replacement (they make a 1.5" compensated nut for their Sterling bass).... so may require some...

Not to rain your parade, but Ibanez made this guitar in a 5 string. Why not just get a factory 5 string neck?
