Bass Player Magazine Lightweight Class D Review

I would have liked it to include my Mesa D800. Ed's opinions are usually very usful and I would like to know how he thinks it stacks up against the competition. Of the amps I have personally tried I haven't found a better one that's American made and even close to the price.

Jesus, I read that article a couple months ago so I already forgot what amps Ed discussed!

I think it was a good call on Ed's part to not include Fender and Ampeg, and do the "smaller" companies, instead.

As to Quilter, that amp is too new to have been included; remember the article was probably written two months (at least) prior to publication.

Ed, also, stated (near the beginning of the article) that it was not to be a full blown review/shootout, so take that into consideration regarding the article's intent.

With that said, I think he did a fine overview of the products included in the article.

I think people have cooled on them because they're now Asian made instead of Italian, much of their stuff is considerably more expensive than most of the competition, GC is the exclusive dealer and anything dealing with GC is a big no-no on TB. I still think their stuff is quality but it sorta sucks that their cost savings by going with Asian production didn't get passed onto the consumer.

Music123, which is affiliated with GC, has some KILLER deals on evilBay. I've seen some "blemished" Markbass stuff for sale at excellent price points....

Two things when I read the very abbreviated article. An old Hollywood line spoken by the cop, "nothing new to see here folks, keep moving..." Except for a couple very respected brands (Mesa and Genzler) this seems like a lineup more of the popular advertisers on BP with generic descriptions. Every amp reviewed has more information here on Talkbass than BP.

Second... the title, Max Mini! A Roundup of Ultra-Lightweight Class D Mini Amps seems to be correct for about half the amps. Most of the amps are 8 pounds or more and quite large compared to true micros like the GK's or Micro Markbass.

The thing about all these amps is ... Unless you play them side by side is there really that much difference? I'm still using my Markbass Little Mark II and it still sounds as great as the day I bought it. With any amp we are going to adjust the tone controls until we get a sound we like and in a different club or whatever we may have to make some additional adjustments but we're going to try to get a sound we can live with. When the Aguliar Tone Hammer came out and everyone was going crazy about them I thought I needed to go and check one out. As I played it I kept adjusting the tone controls until it pretty much sounded just like my Markbass amp. On the other hand new equipment is cool.:):D:bassist::hyper:
