Jack Bruce, James Jamerson, Jack Casady, Stanley Clarke and Freeman James. Jusy kidding on the last one. I don't live in Detroit anymore, so I was wondering, does anyone know if Freeman is still around? When I was learning how to play, I was listening to Greg Arama and Michael Davis (Amboy Dukes and The MC5, respectively) but I can't say I was influenced by them other than they were straight ahead bassists and very good at what they did.

For me it was more so listening to guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmy Vaughan that really put me into music. I said, "I want to play like them" and started playing blues rock on the guitar. After a while, I picked up a bass and allowed the blues of SRV to translate into the bass. I didn't really pick up the bass seriously until I started listening to Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and James Brown. Songs like "Take Five" and "Chameleon" really influenced my early years of serious bass playing. Now I'm more into playing music like Sleep, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan, Hella, and Battles.

My biggest influence is Martin Mendez of Opeth, however Geezer Butler had a huge influence on my playing. So did David Ellefson. I'm getting into alot of other music other than metal now, and some other players are sure to impact my playing style sooner than later I'm sure.

So, i wanna know, which bass player had the biggest infulence on your playing and why? Or more players, each for one style.

For example, in general the biggest influence on me is definitely made by Victor Wooten, but in funk style my influence for sure was Bootsy Collins.
