Bass Players Lack of Evolution

We have 5, 6, and more stringed basses AND most players only use 4 fingers on their fretting hand and 2 fingers on the other hand!

I even hear there are neanderthals that use a pick!

Shouldn't Bass Players be growing extra fingers and USING them by now?

No one ever asks WHY Jaco only needed 4 strings! Was it lack of development?

I noticed this week that without my making the slightest conscious contribution the two seemingly unemployed fingers on my right hand have started muting the A and D strings when the two plucking fingers are attending to the G. I tried to glimpse down at what on earth was going on, but a very sharp voice told me not to ruin things by trying to understand.

On the one hand this feels like evolution, on the other, if this is how I'm going to do things then I will need additional fingers if I want to play 5 or 6 strings
