When I was playing metal, I mostly used an Ibanez SR800 and an Ibanez EDC700 (to a lesser extent I also used a P bass, but since that's out.....) They both had the same 24 fret neck that was thin and fast, and both were active. The SR800 had a P+J setup and the EDC700 had a pair of soapbars. Volume, blend, bass, treble, and sweepable mids for the controls for both. The EDC700 looked really slick and I preferred it's tone over the SR800. Both can be had for a reasonable price used.

And, I second BazzTard's recommendation, both of my Jazz basses with Rotosounds and some overdrive absolutely crush in a metal setting.

"Let's eat, grandma!" vs. "Let's eat grandma!" - Proper punctuation saves lives! :D

OP, check out the black Sire M3 if you want a 4, or the the V7 if you want a 5 - very much bass for not so much $$.

Do you like slim necks or thick necks?

Active or passive?

Growl or thump?

Traditional or modern look?

Is there a budget?

Do things like string spacing or fretboard radius matter to you?

How many strings? 4? 5? 6?

Full scale or short scale?

I like a slim neck. I like both active and passive. I looking for more of a growl with more of a modern look. I dont really have a bugget but I would say under 1800. String spacing and fretboard dosn't matter. I play a 4string so I'd like a 4 string but 5stiring is fine.
I have never played a short scale
