Double Bass Bass resonate on particular note

I've just been going through this with my new (to me) bass on the A. Open A or fingered. I have a very light weight tail piece and the resonant note is A. I put a plastic clamp on the tailpiece to experiment. It made a world of difference. So I added weight to the tailpiece which also dampened everything just a bit. The bass is SO much easier to amplify now, and I can get more volume before feedback as well.
I just followed the advice I got here on TB. Went to an auto parts store and got some stick-on lead weight squares. I put them on the back of the tailpiece, so they aren't seen. I added one at a time till it got rid of the issue. I think I ended up using 5 or 6, 1/2 oz (14 gr) weights. Quick, easy, cheap. Good luck.

The Gollihur “Bass Bomb”, a little black foam ball they sell for $5, also did a great job of taming a few strange resonances on my travel bass. Just cram it under the tailpiece, and you’re good to go.

I tried that using a Tennis ball (large Kong ball) and balled up a piece of dense foam. It really didn't help me all that much. Your mileage may vary.

I had the same experience with a foam football that I used in Reno. It helped a little, but not a lot. The little bass bob is smaller, and fits right down where the tailpiece meets the saddle. For some reason, that works better. I realize that it’s pretty much a crapshoot, though...just happy I got lucky!
