What are some good bass shops close to me? I've got a luthier that I go to about 15 minutes from me, but he only has two or three basses at any given time that aren't 1/2 size (he deals a lot in younger players), and I'm interested in checking out other shops in my neck of the woods (Columbia, SC; Asheville, NC; Atlanta, GA; etc). Anyone know of anything?

The one that I end up sending students to is Ron Sachs' in ATL. It is only two hours door to door. They are north of ATL on Pleasant Hill Rd, so it keeps you out of most of the traffic. They normally have at least 15 basses in stock of varying levels. http://www.ronaldsachs.com
Other than Greensboro, which is three hours from here- that's about it as far as stock of instruments. I do some bass repair and work on the local pro's instruments. There is also James Condino in Asheville. He doesn't stock all that many basses, correct me if I am wrong James, but he does make instruments and gets some through the shop on a pretty regular basis for sale.

The thought police may bust me on some technicality, but since someone else already mentioned me...here goes. Most of what I do is about a 50 /50 split between restoration work and new builds out of my own shop and then I help Dream Guitars keep the fleet in top form.( For guitar nerds, that is one of the finest places in the country). I also do a fair bit of lutherie teaching and tonewood brokering. All of the talkbass geeks are welcome to stop by for a few laughs, a bit of bass nerdiness, a little playing music, and to checkout my latest new build anytime they are in the neighborhood.
I always try to keep a few instruments available for sale around, but in Asheville, almost everything gets sold before I can even put it up for public sale. Are you looking for a carved bass or a vintage ply? If vintage plys are your thing, go visit George Shuffler in Hickory. He generally has a dozen or more nice vintage King, American Standard, and Kays on hand. Call me at the shop, 828.450.5440, and I'll give you his details. For any plywood nerd, just get in your car and go up to Jerry Fretwell's place; bring your plastic and leave your girlfriend / other at home- 'nuff said.

Another vote for Bob Beerman's Bass Violin Shop. I was very pleased with their work and was completely flabbergasted at how reasonable their prices are.

Thanks, I think that's who I need to get in touch with. I'm dying to get my hands on an old King. Ideally, in the end I'd like a vintage ply and a carved bass, but I'm thinking the ply will be what I go for first. Does he do trades? I'll try to give you a call sometime this week.
