All the good websites I was using are now shutdown. That stupid legal crap about copyright infringment of tab. The good sites I was using are now restricted to what you can do. Do any of you guys know a website that still works and is good for tab? ultimate-guitar.com doesnt impress me. I need a site better.

You should start one. See how long it lasts. AKA no, there's no real decent ones left, that I know of.
when I say decent...I mean a website where I can look up and artist and they bne there. Like on some websites. Theres no Led Zeppelin or red hoit chilli peppers because they have been removed. that kind of decent. I can figure out peoples ****ed up tabs.
There is www.fretplay.com This is a fairly good site for bass tab and guitar chords/tab. I will warn you that most are transcriptions done by the poster and so you may find that some of them are a bit rough or vague sounding. Assuming you're a fairly good player then you may be able to just improvise on the bits that don't sound right.
I'll also warn you that it only seems to primarily do guitar tab and chords, and even then it is mostly indie and rock music. Although there is some Jaco Pastorius.

I hate sites that are dedicated to ****ty music. Not to many players have skills these days. You can find a million tabs for some power chord 4 note **** band. Yet you cant find near as many tabs for something that requires you to actually have skill.

Some songs are being shutdown, but you can usually find what you want.
If tabs don't work out for you, you could always use your ear.
my ear sucks.... Im not good playin stuff by ear. Im not like an awsome bass player. Im still learning everything.
www.ttabs.com has plenty of Zep and RHCP. The best one I know of still going. I think a TB'er was in on setting it up. They think they have a loop hole but won't say what it is.

I first however try to learn the song by ear .. I mainly check tabs after I've worked on the song for a half hr or hr .. see if I'm missing notes .. having problems with fills .. etc. Ear training takes time .. but once you've got it it makes transposing pieces very easy.

What is it that makes people think that music should be free? Downloading tabs means you learn things inaccurately most of the time, and the artist who wrote the music doesn't benefit. If you want sheet music you should pay for it, just as you should pay for music that you want to listen to.

I can understand why some say learn by ear and appreciate the skill is a great thing but I don't understand the gripe against tabs. Reading from any form of notes be it notation, tabs or scribble can't always be a bad thing. Session players use sheet music all the time, isn't that similar?

So, let me get this progression straight. You are a great bass player that likes/needs tab to learn a song. I assume this based on your slam of a majority of bass players "not to(o) many players have skills these days". You are so good you can "figure out peoples ****ed up tabs", but your ears suck, you're not good at playing "stuff" by ear, and you're still learning everything?
I would hate for you to have to learn even the most basic fundamental concepts of the instrument you claim to know. I'm sure it would be easier to waste a bunch of time (yours and ours) trying to find illegal tab charts that are almost guaranteed to be incorrect (I'm sure you can fix them with those bad ears and no theory training) instead of furthering your education and becoming useful to your group and to others around you.
I want to congratulate you on being the poster child for illegal downloading of tab(lature) music.
Learn your scales and hum in perfect pitch as you do it.

Find 2 close notes in the music. (Not hard)

It's clinical and accurate. It can be a very very easy way to play by ear. We are all suposed to have perfect pitch. Just a matter of practicing.
If you don't know how to do this, this is what you NEED to learn first.
After that, TAB's will be something you can create instead of using.
I don't mind TABS though, specially if it's something that isn't about a single note, such as technique description.

I disagree with mostly everything that you've written here. Tabs should be free, because it's someone's "interpretation" of another's work. It's not supposed to be 100% perfect, nor endorsed by the original artist.
As far the the "artist not benefitting" from people getting free tabs as opposed to buying sheet music, well that's a little misleading. Sure the artist gets something from every book sold, but how much? Off of a $20 book they might get 50 cents? Less than that?
Same thing when it comes to downloading music from sites. I have no problem paying money to support the artists that I enjoy. But the artist doesn't recieve as much money as they should, IMO. Record labels recieve the majority of it. For a $20 CD, how much of it does the artist recieve?
So the theory goes like this...
The artist really isn't getting the fair end of the deal by only receiving $0.20 a copy for the music, so let's make it more FAIR by giving him nothing?
Did you really write that, or is it somebody else hijacking your user name to make you look REALLY STUPID?
And the idea that since it is an interpretation of something so it should be free is just as brilliant. I really feel sorry for you if you truly believe all that.
