Bass Transgressions

Anyone go from high end basses to super cheap basses?

I have a MIM Fender Jazz V coming in......

My #1 & #2 basses are a 'Wick Corvette $$ 5 and EBMM SR5.

I was looking for a bass that I could beat up a little, or take to scary gigs......
Lately the Warwick has been my baby. Every gig for a while now. Not sure I can play anything else?
My point being, was it dumb to buy the Fender?
Especially, since I couldn't get along with the MIA Jazz V I once had?

Play what you want to, if you are scared to play a bass in a club i think maybe you should reconsider even playing that show. Play it, then put it in your car or van, or sit with it in a locked case all night, if you're that worried then go home with it. Why hang out in a club your scared to be in ?

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure why I purchased the MIM.....good deal I suppose.
And a distant memory of playing a MIM Jazz V that was better than the MIA I had. :o

Only time I worry about theft is when the van is parked outside on the street full of gear. :(

My idea was to get it, and spray paint it whenever I felt like it......my little experimentation bass.

Can I just remove the hardware neck and electronics and spray it with a new color, and just clear coat that?
I'm not looking for finish perfection, just a bass I can do whatever I want to......

This isn't necessarily about playing a club that I am scared to be in... I'm not sure that's ever happened. Rather, it's about playing in a situation where an instrument could get damaged. I've played private parties where scuffles have broken out; in one case a PA stack was toppled into my amp rig - no major damage, but I'm glad it didn't fall on my bass. I've played in cramped stages where the singer would still prance around and swing his mic stand, and where dancing drunks have tripped over the floor monitor, crashing into gear.

Fortunately I don't mind dings on my bass, but I certainly understand that others care very much about wear and tear. So yes, this is an extremely relevant thread: do you put your pristine bass at risk, or use a lower-priced "beater bass"?

I've got a brand-spankin' new bass coming in, and even though I'm less concerned about dings than most, the first is always the worst. I should just ding it myself and get it over with. :p

Anyone need a MIM J V?

Personally I've always liked MIM's ... for the $$ they are the next best thing to a MIA. I've had (2) over the years ... always thought they were pretty sweet.

IF you and the MIM don't get along ... you can always throw it up on the classifieds for a Rock Bass, since you seem to dig your current Wick so much.

.... just a thought. Personally I'd trade or sell it before I'd paint it ... but that's just me. :)

The other part that gets me, is that I really love my Warwick.....sounds so good, tight low B, and amazing neck.

It's hard to think about ditching that for live shows.......

Plus the switch from actives to passives is weird too. :o

Do you know if the pickups are any different in the MIM? Hotter?

I'm loving the Warwick, but I'm also a Fender man. :)

The whole idea of buying this MIM Jazz V was that I could experiment with it. Spray paint it a nice flat blue with tort guard....and then later spray it cream white and whatever color strikes my fancy.

Several years back, I went from this-

to this-

It was a gas. I still keep it around for parties where things might get a bit too wild for my special ordered EBMMs.
