I bought a Behringer UC6102 USB guitar/bass interface off Ebay for $35 that included a Guitar Amp emulator with 50 or so killer guitar/bass amps, effects, etc...
It has a Hi/Lo impedence switch so you can use passive or active instruments. My passive electric guitars sound just as good as my active basses.
I took the master tracks from Trent Reznor's new project, "How to Destroy Angels" for two songs and dropped everything but the vocals and then re-recorded the drum (used Pro-Tools to make new drum tracks from other NIN samples), guitar and bass tracks.
The guitar and bass tracks were recorded using my Behringer USB interface right into the computer. Everything was mixed in Sony Vegas, no changes to the guitar or bass tracks was needed in Pro-Tools.
** I did upgrade the original batched amp emulator software to a full version of Native Instruments GuitarRig4 with Kontroller Pedal Box ($400), so I now have thousands of amp/effect combos possible and the software comes with a hundred presets for everything from U2 (the Edge) to DimeBag Darrell's (Pantera's) guitar presets. The presets are a little weak where the bass is concerned, but the software's ability to allow you to set up industry standard Head/Amp combos is not. And you can create and save your own presets.

For $35 the final result of being able to use this device is without question the best recording solution/computer interface solution for the money.
I did, however, play this music on a $2500 USA Spector ARC6 electric guitar and a $2500 Spector Euro4LX bass. But my $400 Ibanez bass sounded great with this USB unit as did all of my other (previous) basses and guitars.

I currently own a 15W portable Yamaha Amp... that's it. For all of my guitars and basses I'm a session player at this point... so the only thing I need is software and a way to get the guitar plugged into the computer.
