Bass Uke

Hi there. I am a long time Uke player. (sorry) I came across a Alvarez MSB-1 in a pawn shop. I want to string it D-G-B-E like the bottom four strings on a 6 string Jazz Bass. The issues are that I have no idea what I am doing. The nearest Music store is 4 (yep 4) hours away so you guys are it. Here is the list of questions. I want to string this thing like a Tenor Guitar but down one Octave. Also...this instrument has only a 27 inch scale. What gauge strings should I use? Thank you all for your input. (I also posted this on the Strings Forum...but this area seems to get more traffic)

D-G-B-E??
Maybe I need more coffee (slurp!) LOL.

Here is how a 6 string bass is tuned (from lowest to highest, from closest string to your chin to closest to your toes);
B-E-A-D-G-C.

You might be looking for Tenor tunings all together. I believe a tenor guitar is tuned ADGC from lowest pitch to highest pitch.

You may want to contact Soaresy, the tenor guitar/mandocello manufacturer from Portugal/Westchester NY-they used to make all kinds of short scale bass and tenor instruments with alternate tunings and reading the fine print, tended to use some kind of cello strings for the most part.

First tho, learn how to tune a bass!:cool:
