Double Bass Bass Wheels

Thought it would be useful to let people know a great place to get bass transportation wheels is at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I've used both models they make for several years and they are very reliable and reasonably priced. The website is new. I can highly recommend them. Peter
 
Those look nice, but kind of pricey?

I made my own from parts I got at the hardware store for about $7.50 US.

Wow, that is great... I'd like to se if I can make a wheel that attaches to the side of your bass like those new bass buggies but simpler... Something lightweight that just stays on your case. I think that would be ideal
 
Glasser came up with an interesting one. It has a foot-operated brake that locks the wheel in place. So you can effectively use it as your endpin when popping into places to give lessons or gigs. Also handy standing on a bus or train I would imagine. I don't know where it prices yet.

That's pretty cool. Does it go directly into your endpin or does it attach to the case?

Below is a materials list and a sketch. The wheel itself is shown cut away in cross-section.

1. 10 mm (same size as end pin) hex bolt with head cut off
2. 10 mm hex nut
3. 10 mm flat washer
4. 1-1/4" x 1/8" steel flat bar
5. 10 mm Nylok locking nut
6. 6" dia. lawn mower wheel
7. 1/2" Nylok locking nut
8. 1/2" flat washer
9. 1/2" nylon washers
10. 1/2" hex bolt

The hardest thing for most people would be fabricating the U-shaped steel bracket.

I only transport my bass over short distances on fairly smooth surfaces, so I used a wheel with a solid rubber tire. If I needed to take the bass "cross-country" I would probably build a new wheel with a pneumatic tire.

I have a reasonably well-equipped garage shop. I would say the minimum tools required would be square, hacksaw, center punch, large solid machinist vise, hammer, drill press, drill press vise, twist drills, step drill, files.

As far as the cost goes, I didn't actually save any receipts, so the $7.50 is an estimate. I also used whatever scrap metal and fasteners I happened to have around.
