Bass with green plastic insert in headstock?

I recently got a book on Burns guitars "Pearls and Crazy Diamonds" Fifty Years of Burns Guitars 1952-2002 and there is Hayman overlap as Burns was associated with a few other companies like Baldwin and Fenton-Weill. All very unique takes on guitar/bass design.

I believe these listings are for the same one since they are both coming out of the same city in Wisconsin. One is from eBay, the other from Reverb.

Might be obscure to you folks over the Atlantic but plenty of us in the UK know them well.
Heck !! The Hayman featured in the NVBBD post , I know the owner :laugh:
We got gear coming from the US and gear coming from the Far East,plus our home grown gear. If it wasn't for the import and sales taxes we'd be in heaven :D

I know, it never ceases to surprise me- I've never even heard of this brand.

Won't be too surprised if someday, a post will ask " I remember a bass I had once...it had 4 strings..." and someone here will be able to guess the make, model, year and color.

I'm starting to realize it was kind of cool for a 15 year old to find one of these hanging in a Northern Alberta guitar shop in '79 and getting it as his first ever bass.

I don't even remember why I don't have it anymore but I must have traded it in against something.

I'm too young to be getting this nostalgic but man oh man... how I wish I had that bass.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia.

I miss my first bass (that I made in woodwork class at school), a short scale SG copy that was all oak and weighed a ton. It was more of a BSO (bass shaped object) and was unplayable beyond the 3rd fret, but it got me started.

I sold it to a kid who thought he could fix it up, it probably got chopped up for firewood not long after he bought it (1968).

Dang it. There was one listed for way less than that recently on a local(ish) Craigslist but I can't remember where? I pretty much constantly check the listings all over NC and in Southern VA and Myrtle Beach SC. Poke around if you want and I'll help if it's anywhere near me. I'll try to look later when I get some time.

Thread drift: 20-something years ago a friend of mine calls me up on the phone, doesn't say "Hello" or identify himself or anything, just immediately asks "What's the name of that band that sucks?"

I took about a second to parse the question and then replied "Hootie & The Blowfish?"

He says "That's it, thanks" and hangs up.



True story.

Well, this is the thread that keeps on giving. I just picked up a cool bit of trivia about one of my favourite Peter Gabriel tracks. David Rhodes used a Shergold 12-string on "Red Rain".

About 20 years ago the bassist in a band I was in had one of those Haymans with the two P-bass-looking pickups and the little "window" in the headstock. It was one of 3-4 different basses he'd rotate through, depending on the his mood, I guess. Usually it was a Fender Jazz, but fairly often he'd substitute the Hayman. I remember thinking it was less punchy and focused-sounding than the Jazz, but it had this great big pillowy push to its sound; it made some pretty solid low end.

For some reason the band all referred to it as The Haymaker.
