Basses not in case

Hi,

I know this has been covered afew times but i would like to re-confirm if it's really alright to leave my basses in the room.

I turn on the Air-Condition at night and turns it off in the morning and thus there will be temperature variation.

and also, I've read that, leaving the basses on stands might warp the neck. How true is that?

lastly, if I would insist to leave it outside due to convenience, is there anything I could do to reduce the "damage" that could possibly happen?
like..e.g. a dehumidifier?

Thanks alot for answering the questions!

It's OK to leave a bass on the stand. The neck won't warp because it's on a stand. The temperature change won't have much effect - your temperature is probably something like 70 deg. F with the AC on and maybe 85 deg. F when it's off? No big deal. The only reason you would need a dehumidifier is if you are in a very humid environment, like a basement. Air conditioning itself dehumidifies the air - I'm sure you've seen water dripping out of an air conditioner.

I would only be concerned about a very old/very rare/very expensive bass. Run of the mill stuff, like Fender, Ibanez, even Sadowsky, Tobias, etc. is plenty robust to handle a 15 degree gradual temperature variation with no change in properties.

I'm a believer that strings deteriorate faster on basses left out in the open. Also dust will settle on the bass too, so if you're constantly wiping them off then the finish is going to swirl more than a bass that lives in a case.

Years ago I used to leave them out, but for the past 5-6yrs since they've lived in cases, I surely haven't needed to restring anywhere near as often.
