I totally forgot to add one serious one.
If the youngster is planning on staying in the bass gig for a long time - consider the following.
Ibanez aeb (acoustic electic bass) + hole plug + tape wound strings.
I still play mine.. it cost about $200 used.. sounds like an upright when setup .. can be gigged with.. jammed with or practicted.
Possibly this may be the sugggested one for a newbie.. unfortunately it's not cool.. kind of like peavey.. good long term stage gear.. not snob gear.

I don't know if I'm inviting flames, but I think the Daisy Rock Rockcandy basses are gems. The necks are nice, I believe they have 24 frets, and they also have active Duncan designed electronics. Of course the reason I could see people not wanting to play them is because they only come in frosted hot pink.(they are made for girls after all) But in all honesty the color has always been one of my favorite parts. They also retail for 300, what more could you want?
I really liked my Ibanez AEB10, it was a solid instrument with great electronics, I only sold it because of how little I played it. Good bass for the money, only flaw was the usual lack of acoustic sound due to its not being massive

Ibanez Roadmaster -- it's like an active jazz, but way less expensive. 2-octave neck, great electronics, light and easy to play. great bass. Under $400 new.
I meant good. Ridiculously good. Especially the AXL Faultline series of bass amps. I can't describe the sound other than... "Massive"... I guess.

Anyone who has ever shopped at a big chain for (example) a MIM Fndr will have had the experience of playing 19 of the same model, and one of them really has a soul or a vibe to it and stands out. THAT is the instgrument you want (regardless of whatever brand we are talking.) And if you find it used, you have real value.

My Peavey T20 bass is back with me for good. I regretted getting rid of it the first time, after reading how other owners have missed theirs about being such a great bass guitars. It's NOT a light bass at all.
I also think that anyone who has put together a "frankenstein" bass has also put a "real value" in those basses. I had a friend who put an MIM Jazz fretless neck on a Squier P-bass body with a DiMarzio P pickup that sounds fantastic. And he did it for $250!

Hohner HRB-DLX. After new p/u's this is my main bass. 24 frets, active/passive, fishman pre, mahogany, big fat bridge, cool body (and great balance), awesome. I tried to research it on here before I bought it, and no one had any info on it. no one had even heard of it, so I hesitated, but I only paid $200 (ebay) and am just as happy as that time I spent $2000 on a warwick.
My Ibanez 890 still had the $1100 price tag in the case when I bought it at the pawn shop for $220 in mint condition with the OHSC. She's ugly, but she sings....

Well, I guess it's like a moped.. fun to ride until a friend sees you.... but an amazing bass, nonetheless.....
I can't believe this thread has gone 7 pages without anyone mentioning Danelectro. My DC bass is one of my all time favorites. It sounds great, the neck is very fast and is a nice compromise of P and J width, and it's light as a feather! I saw a nice DC go for $180 last month on Ebay.

Bought a parts bass. She has a '78 P neck (refretted), aftermarket body (prob All Parts, etc), Bill Lawrence pup and a Hipshot detuner. The bass KILLS and I prob only have about $500 into it tops. It truly is amazing! DESTROYS just bout any P I've ever owned or tried. Bad pic below.....

I picked up a B.C. Rich knock-off Warlock 5 string bass for $99 on E-Bay. I got lucky because this bass was in "like new" condition and after new strings, bridge and neck adjustments, it sounds awesome and looks bad ass. It has a great bridge almost like my Dean ZBX, strait neck and stays in tune. I don't know the brand Laurel but for less than $100 bucks, I couldn't pass it up. I guess sometimes you can get lucky with E-Bay!!!
