I totally forgot to add one serious one.
If the youngster is planning on staying in the bass gig for a long time - consider the following.
Ibanez aeb (acoustic electic bass) + hole plug + tape wound strings.
I still play mine.. it cost about $200 used.. sounds like an upright when setup .. can be gigged with.. jammed with or practicted.
Possibly this may be the sugggested one for a newbie.. unfortunately it's not cool.. kind of like peavey.. good long term stage gear.. not snob gear.
By devastating, did you mean good or bad?
The AXL Badwater was reviewed in bass player,it's vintaged P copy.They said it was pretty good for the money.
My Ibanez 890 still had the $1100 price tag in the case when I bought it at the pawn shop for $220 in mint condition with the OHSC. She's ugly, but she sings....
