i tried one of the Chris Squire Signature basses from Rickenbacker once. The neck felt like a baseball bat and i didn't care for the sound. Oh well...

Basses that disappointed you...

I did adjust the trim on the Tonepump, and spent time setting up the bass. I enjoyed how comfortable it was to play, but unfortunately still couldn't get it to sound right (to me), so it had to go.

RIC- except the 4005, which I doubt I'll ever find one affordable ever again. I've heard Ric's sound amazing in other peoples hands, but couldn't sell mine fast enough.
Active Basses- Just not for me.
Stingrays-Never played one I liked
Reverse T-Birds- Can't hang with the neck dive.
Any Epiphone- I had a JC for a minute...kinda cool, but not cool enough to hang on to.
Jazz Basses- Not sure why...they just don't work for me.
But then, my favorite bass I currently own is a 1983 Peavey T-40, so what do I know?!

The early Traben Basses. I really wanted to like them because a really good friend was the original designer, but I just found they were ridiculously heavy and not put together very well. I felt much better when I found out my friend was no longer associated with the company because they had sold off his designs to Hanser Holdings. He was furious because they had agreed to make high US built models and the owner went ahead and sold them off resulting in mass produced Korean basses.
I really, really wanted to like G&L SB-2 Tributes, as a big PJ fan. But ack no, the neck is very clinical/narrow/light, the body is light, the sound is very non-vibrating. Maybe sometimes perfection goes too far.
Most Schecters, except their 8 string Stiletto, I believe.
Warwicks..they loooook soo cool! But..then I felt their neck, and it felt cheap.
Hofner IGNITION's, I have a CT and have played a vintage early '70s Hofner, and the Ignition was horrible set up, the neck was way too thin, and well...it just didn't sound..nice, to me.

Hofner Icon - just cheap feeling and sounded like shite.
Other one would be a Fender P I owned for 6 months - loved the sound of it, but could never get used to the neck - too chunky for me, and I never could adapt - was sorry to sell it cause it sounded so nice.

Carl Thompson five string. I wanted to try one to see what all the fuss was about. The 36" scale made it uncomfortable and with a single pickup it was basically a one trick pony that cost as much as a used car.

Bought a Washburn XB-400 I think it was back in the mid or late 90's. Bass looked great but sounded like crap. Sold it not too longer after I bought it. Same with my first bass, my Cort bass that was probably built in the 80's or earlier? Biggest piece of crap there ever was. I hated that bass.
Any bass hyped on Talkbass as being all that and a bag of chips is likely to disappoint. Approach it with a clear head, evaluate it for what it is, and you may actually feel more favorably inclined to something than if you had unreasonably high expectations. I've fallen for it, but won't again. Fortunately it didn't cost me anything more than a day spent driving to a store that had some of the TB favorites in stock, testing them out, and driving back without buying anything. The brand in question was Sadowsky, but there was a sprinkling of $6000 Warwick in there as well. Even at that time, I knew about the Precision and 4003. Both just sound like generic $200 basses to me.
I like threads like this. Compile the list of disappointing basses, and you realize every bass ever made is made out of fail. "Basses that surprised you" (in a good way) would be a much more fun thread.

My Rickenbacker 4003 I just HAD to have, for the usual reasons.
And the exact opposite, I fully expected to dismiss the Fender P roadworn I tried in the store, but really loved it for how it felt and played (but didn't buy it, still can't get on board with the whole rw concept).

How do you define "break?" I find Ibby's to be very durable...doesn't make them perfect though.
Squier VM Precision Tele Bass....I wanted to like it but the tone was just pure mud and the neck was too clubby for me.
Have you ever tried the old Ibanez ? Vintage ones ?
I used to think like you... before I tried the old Ibies...
They're quite awesome !
Awesome construction quality, tone for days, great looking... Real basses and pretty much the best deals for the bucks right now...
