Basses that disappointed you...

3 fairly recent ones:

EBMM stingray 5- just couldn't get the sound I wanted out of it.
Line6 Variax 705 - 20 different settings all sound like piezo in the live mix
Peavey USA Millennium 5 - love my Cirrus 5 and my Foundation 5, but not impressed with this highly vaunted preamp.

In 2000 (or so), I played a Yamaha 5 string that had extremely close string spacing. I wish I could find a photo of one. It looked sort of like a P-Bass but with sharper horns. The spacing was so far from a Fender spacing that I actually missed strings with my plucking hand. The bass sounded okay, as I remember it.

for me it is myCarvin AC50 My guitar playingformer bandmate (4 times, 1 time his 3 times my fault) is a Carvin guy . amps, mixers, speakers, guitars, basses, you get the picture. so he tells me the AC50 is the best thing since sex. all though he does not have one all he has res is great! so new they are anywhere from $900- $2100. So I start look for one used and find they are very hard to find. Last year while in Dallas for my job I find one online and buy it for $650 thinking I got this great deal. fast forward to this year, while it isa very nice bass it does not WOW me at all.
Great for church, jass and theater work, but not as all around as my G&L2500 with the Kmod.
Long story, but I'm sticking to it!

I own a Warwick Fortress One; researching them, people generally give them pretty great reviews. On one hand, I LOVE the playability & feel of it, it's light, has a great thin neck, and the boasts great lows and low-mids with a really nice warm tone....HOWEVER, every time I use it with the band, either practice or gig, I'm disappointed how little the high-mids and highs cut through the mix. My Warwick Corvette $$ and Fernandes P-bass blow it away in that regard....so I don't really gig out with it anymore, but I don't want to part with it either. It's probably more an an EQ situation more than anything, but still wish those higher notes would pop out more on their own.

Unfortunately, every Fender I've ever owned (17 total) Mostly playability is the negative factor, the sound is usually pretty good.

Most Gibson basses are also on the low side in my book.

Most of the cheap "hey that looks great but sounds and plays like crap" basses like Brice, SX, Johnson, etc.

Went to GC with cash to buy a Gibson EB3. I always loved the look since seeing Jack Bruce as a kid. Played one and it just felt wrong to me. Same goes for the Hofner Beatle bass. I can't believe how bad the Hofner felt to me. Of course it's a personal thing.

Anything, ever, with either Gibson or Epiphone on the headstock, except for 1 T Bird one time. I don't know what it was about that bass but it really sounded good. Still heavy and didn't really care for the neck though...

A G&L P/J that I played, set up was a factor but I didn't care for the sound of feel..

A Schecter Stargazer, felt okay but I could not get a tone I liked, even played through 3 different amps. that surprised the hell out of me but I can also chalk it up to not playing with it longer to see what I might have been missing in terms of the preamp and the eq on any given amp.. (As a rule I don't care for active basses)

And of course there is the huge assortment of beat up, hack job modded, cheapo imported stuff I have tripped on over the years...
