I have a cool looking, well built bass that I gutted, putting crappy hardware and electronics that I'd gotten for free into it. Pickups are from an Epiphone Goth Les Paul. Pots from various old $100 guitars, wires that were in my "wire box" where I stick all the odd lengths of wire leftover form other projects that might be useful someday. Really, bottom of the barrel stuff, I was going to trade it in and knew since it's an unknown brand I'd get peanuts for it. Thinking this I took off the nice Schaller components to recoup some of my purchase price in quality parts.
Strung with ultra thin (85 or 90 E, I forget) Rotosounds that I actually dug out of my trash. They are very old and had been taken off something else several weeks prior, I had judged them too far gone to save even for emergency spares.
Honk city. Once I got it all assembled, I took it to practice to make sure it was functional. The band loved the way it fit in the mix, and insisted I keep it.
