to me it sounds like the OP might have the 1st signs of a case of GAS...

I always associate GAS with specific desire.

If it's more like just a case of gear wanderlust then I hope he has money to blow because that's often pricey and pointlessly pricey so it's sort of a bad habit. I think it's better to be in a musical rut and practice and experiment your way out of it than to be in a gear rut and SPEND your way out of it.

If the OP truly has no idea what he wants, I guess just head down to GC and start randomly trying stuff out. It's weird not to have ANY guidlines, though.

Try a Fender P Lyte. Great basses. Light in weight, narrow and thin neck. Actually a jazz neck. Small body and only weighs about 7.5 lbs. One in really good shape should only cost you around $500, plus or minus... Hard to find though they quit making them quite some time ago.
