Basses with a neck humbucker

Hi!

I always liked the tone of a large humbucker located near the neck of a bass. It's a sound I do not get with my current basses. I wouldn't be willing to spend a fortune to get that tone, though, but I'd like a good playable bass to do so.

Of course, the most simple answer seems to be an Epiphone EB-0, but it's so cheap, it makes me wonder if it would last. I also tried a Squier Telecaster Bass Special that I liked, but I'd like to know what other options there is out there, say under 500$.

Any thoughts?

This one looks good and sounds great.
Mini humbucker but big tone.
Under $400.
Only short-scale I really like.

Yamaha BB714BS. It's a cheapened-down version of the Yamaha Attitutde bass

What I mean is an humbucker that is immediately next to the bridge, like on Gibson EB-0/EB-3 models, for example...
My main bass is a USA G&L L-2500, which I've rocking since 1997.
The idea of a bass with an humbucker just next to the neck is to get the particular sound people like Jack Bruce had. It's not like if I absolutely need that sound, I just like it and I'm looking for a cheap way to get it, for the fun of it. Up to now, an Epiphone EB-0 seems to be the most inexpensive way to go, but I'm looking for other options (the Epi is extra cheap, and I'm not all that used to entry level instruments now... but if it works, well... why not?).

I have two(2) Fender Modern Player Telecaster Basses, both I found on-line sub-$500. They are remarkable instruments once you get them dialed-in and way more versatile than the single p/u models. I've been playing for years, many different basses and these are some of the finest I've ever owned! The Fender Starcaster is next on the list...many folks say it doesn't FEEL like a short-scale, even though it actually is...those p/u's have some TONE!
