Basses you made yourself?

My dream was to own a blonde, handcarved DB. So I built one. It was a lot of tedious, hard work. But it was the most enjoyable project that I have ever undertaken. I turned much better than I had ever hoped.

Advice? Start getting your materials together. Get the best tonewoods that you can afford. Also know that the materials( back, sides, neck block, tuners, fingerboard, strings) will add up to the cost of a real nice ply bass. A ball park figure would be appx. $1800-$2000 for just decent materials. And the cost goes up from there depending on how much you are willing to invest into your project. If you live near a sawmill, sometimes youcan get a deal on maple. I got my beautiful flamed maple from Zehr's sawmill in Reading Mi. I let it dry for 4 years. Start reading everything that you can find about stringed instrument building. Building a DB is kinda like building a fiddle, just a whole lot bigger. I say go for it. If I can build a nice looking, easy playing, great sounding DB, you can too. If you have any specific questions, you can PM me. Pals, Vic.
