Double Bass Bassist Advice/Tips

Hello, my name is Byron. I joined TalkBass this year on January. I'm a bit new, but I know enough to know where to look at for recommendations. Except I haven't found a thread on sharing fellow bassist knowledge! I would love to get feedback on this. Here are the questions...
Who/What inspired you to play bass(or any other instrument)?
Who/What motivates you to keep getting better and achieve your musical goals?
If you could give a few tips on bass playing, what would you suggest?
What bands/albums would you recommend to others to give a listen to?(limit 3, no bashing on other bands or musicians, that's simply childish)

I started playing bass because my best friend had a notion that I would be a natural bassist, so he rescued a MIM jazz bass from eBay and sent it to me for Christmas (2010). Needless to say, I pretty much fell in love with it.

The thing that motivates me the most is trying to reach the same level of technical proficiency and comfort and ability with composing as I have with my cello. It's challenging to try to match the same level of skill and it keeps me excited! I have grown so attached to my bass that it's become a sort of obsession... And I'm not complaining!

the same tip that I give to every musician is this: Practice QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

Not really for bass in particular, but I really suggest Maserati for a good listen (pyramid of the sun is a great album) :)

Killer Neuron thanks for the reply :D I'll be sure to listen to that album you mentioned. You just never know, I might get new bassline/songwriting ideas! Thank you for sharing that little story. Is it safe to say you are a Natural Born Bassist? x)

Well about a natural bassist, I had a friend who told me I play bass better than anyone who has had only 2 weeks of experience :) In that moment I felt like I felt special, I felt like I've had found my talent. In life, there has been a lot of mistakes for me. But my mom and uncle buying me a bass and a amp was the probably the best things that have happened in life! I started playing bass this year on Jan. 2 to be exact of this year, self taught, i know how to tune my bass to standard EADG, no lessons (rough times right now :/), no one to tell me I have bad technique, in the beginning i would cheat by relying on tabs. Now It's all by ear. Hopefully before May I know how to play all the songs from one of my favorite albums and band of all time. MASTODON. Listen to the album Crack The Skye, you surely will be amazed! If not, then it's okay... to each his own music, I totally respect that! :)

My advise: Don't let NOBODY in this world tell you you will never be good at playing your fav. instrument. Brush that negativity off, and use it as fuel to prove them wrong. All it takes is dedication, hard work, strong effort, PASSION, and perseverance... and here goes my saying ----> The World Is Yours To Tour :)
