I got an EMG soundhole pickup a couple years ago for my acoustic, and I love it. No pickup really sounds true for acoustic guitar, but it's the closest I've ever gotten with one, and it's a lot easier to use than a mic.

I’ve used several different sound hole pickups over the years. They just don’t capture the acoustic sound as well as a proper microphone.
fishman matrix is the bomb! i have them in my Martins. I think they are better than the L.R. Baggs version. But that might be out of your price range.
And both require that you cut a huge hole in your guitar, very carefully, in a difficult location where there might be bracing.
I've got a D-15 and a 000-15sm - maybe it's the mahogany. not so spruce friendly, me thinks....
I use an audio technica pro70 mini mic that clips to the rim of the soundhole, for recording. Unless you're playing with loud drums, you won't have feedback problems. It sounds much nicer to me than any pickup.
Plus it's easily removable if someone else brings their guitar in. Obviously you plug into a PA with an XLR cable, not an amp.
I would not try using a vocal mic on an acoustic just to jam. The player has to get right up on the mic and not move much. Takes the fun out of jamming I'd say.

And that's not what I'm willing to do.
If it's over 50 bucks, it's out of my price range.
Does anyone have an opinion on the cheaper Chinese PUPs?

I've seen the different kinds but don't know which one to pick.
I saw the 1st kind on ebay for less than $20 but have never heard one.

This is so confusing to a non guitar player, I mean,
I know what they do, but don't know what a acoustic guitar player would choose.
I'm not sure where the short is, at the jack, or at the PUP.
Either way, it seems easier to buy a new one, this one is CL junk.
But you're right, I should buy a iron and learn to solder.
My luthier does my soldering cheap and has spoiled me.

Are you certain the problem is not an "open"? Do you have a volt/ohm meter? Measuring from the jack, a dead short would measure 0 ohms, an open infinite ohms, a good circuit would show the pickup coil in a number of K ohms. Pull the damn thing out of the guitar, lay it on a table over some newspaper and trouble shoot. It is much easier to do things yourself rather than rely on outside help. For me, only when I exhaust all practical means do I throw up my hands and repurchase technology.
I agree with you to a certain extent.
I do the same thing if something is worth it.
I also believe that sometimes dropping back 15 and punting is also a good decision.
But no, I don't have electrical tools,
although I know how to use them (except a soldering iron).
I rewired my first mod myself, an Affinity P, and it worked fine,
but it was ugly underneath the hood, and I'm too anal-retentive for that.
I do a boat load of mods but leave the soldering to my luthier,
who does it free or very cheap since I've done business with him for years.

I meant that maybe the fishman doesn’t produce a good sound for those spruce tops. My mahogany topped guitars sound great with a fishman matrix.
I never heard any of these, but I would try the first because it doesn't require reaming tail pin hole to fit the jack or/and drill the bridge and sand the saddle. It's also the cheapest one. If the sound does not suit you, you just lose $9.99.
Other pickups have a mic as well as magnetic or piezo, so you can blend two sounds.
